In a bold effort to redefine menstrual health education, AHF South Africa and partners united 40 young women and girls for a Girls Act event focused on exploring reliable and sustainable alternatives to traditional sanitary pads.
An AHF nurse mentor led a hands-on demonstration, showcasing the benefits and usage of menstrual cups, tampons, and period underwear, offering participants valuable insights into these non-traditional options. These reusable alternatives not only provide sustainable choices but also play a crucial role in combating period poverty, a lack of access to menstrual products, sanitation, and hygiene education, by reducing the ongoing costs associated with menstruation.
Engaging in group discussions allowed the young women and girls to confront and dispel common myths and misconceptions about menstruation, with expert guidance from nurse clinicians and an AHF medical doctor. As part of the event, 80 pairs of free period underwear were distributed to the attendees, providing them with a sustainable and reusable option for managing their menstrual health.
